Saving models as DirectX files

You can create DirectX (.x) models from wireframe models of objects in order to use these in simulations.

There are many ways to create wireframe models; you can use a CAD program such as AutoCad® or if you are more familiar with mining software, you can create your wireframes using a Datamine or 3rd party application.  Whatever you use, make sure you save the file as one of the wide range of file types which can be imported using the Data Source Drivers dialog.

You will first need to import your model as a wireframe. Once imported, you may need to use the Wireframe Properties dialog and choose the Double Sided option to get rid of any faces which seem to be missing.  You may choose to import your model as a number of wireframes allowing each surface to be treated individually (eg with different draped textures).

Rendering a wireframe surface

Wireframe surfaces can be rendered in a variety of styles. For example, you can:

  • Color and texture the surface by wireframe properties using a color legend,

  • Drape a bitmap over the wireframe surface, like a digital photo or a texture bitmap,

  • Make the wireframe transparent or hidden.

Using these methods you will be able to pitch and roll the texture so that you avoid 'smearing' on vertical surfaces.

DirectX (.x file) export

Once you have prepared your data, you can use the DirectX export function to export the surface to a .X object.

To use the the DirectX export function:

  1. In the Loaded Data control bar, right-click the wireframe object, select Data | Export.

  2. In the Data Export dialog, select the Driver Category [DirectX], Data Type [Wireframe], click OK.

  3. Enter the file name to be created.

  4. Select the field that will represent the COLOR field.

  5. Click OK.

  6. The DirectX file format will be saved.
